The ammonoid Gonioloboceras discoidale Böse, 1920, generally has been regarded as an Upper Pennsylvanian
fossil.  Restudy of this species indicates that it differs from similar Upper Pennsylvanian forms and that it
occurs in Lower Permian strata   at the type locality near Tularosa, New Mexico. Record of this same ammonoid
from Oklahoma in beds firmly established as Lower Pemian verifies the assignrnent.  The genus Mescalites
is proposed for Permian Gonioloboceratidae, with G. discoidale as the type species.  Distinctive features in-
clude a secondary lobe on the flank of the ventral saddle, and a thick dorsolateral shell deposit in the
 mature body chamber.
