Abstract: By means of non-conodont faunas, the "natural" Devonian-Carboniferous
boundary is discussed for outcrops of the Sauerland (Rheinisches Schiefergebirge)
and Saalfeld region (Thüringisches Schiefergebirge).  In these areas belonging to the
pelagic realm of the Variscian belt, the late Famennian Hangenberg silicates and the
Lower Tournaisian Hangenberg limestones are intercalated by some decimetre thick
argillo-calcareous beds, yielding cephalopods (Acutimitoceras prorsum), conodonts
(Protognathodus kuehni) und trilobites (Belgibole abruptirhachis) of late prorsum
(or Upper praesulcata) age, as well as coral and ostracod faunas of Lower Carboni-
ferous habits.  With respect to lithostratigraphical studies just done in the Thüringi-
sche Schiefergerbirge (BARTZSCH et al. 1999), the name "Stockum level", previously
used for the above considered transition beds, is replaced by the lithostratigraphical
term "Mühltal Set"; its sole is defined as the actual ("natural") D-C boundary (sensu
BECKER 1999).  The new unit and its equivalents have been recognised in the
(hemi)pelagic facies of central und western Europe md North Africa, nameely in
the Holy Cross Mountains, the Thüringische Schiefergebirge (Saalfeld region), the
Rheinische Schiefergebirge (Sauerland and Oberfranken region) and the Carnic Alps
as well as in the Montagne Noire and Morocco (Ma'der, Tafilalt).
