Upper Carboniferous rocks are not frequent in Germany. They are concentrated in the Ruhr region and adjacent areas as well as in the area around Aachen (northern Rhenish Massif). The cephalopod faunas are not diverse and restricted to the lower part of the Upper Carboniferous, the Chokierian, Alportian, Kinderscoutian, Marsdenian, Yeadonian of the Namurian stage and the Langsettian, Duckmantian and partly Bolsovian of the Westphalian stage (Westphalian A-C). In general coarsely ornamented or sculptured species of the order Goniatitida prevailed, representatives of the mainly unsculptured Prolecanitida were absent.
