Ammonoid classification at the order and suborder level is introduced.
lt is based on the ontophylogenetic investigations of this cephalopod group.
Subclass Ammonoidea is divided into eight orders: Anarcestida (with the
suborders Agoniatitina, Anarcestina, Auguritina, Gephuroceratina and
Timanoceratina), Prolecanitida (with the suborders Prolecanitina and
Medlicottiina), Goniatitida (with the suborders Tornoceratina, Praeglyphioceratina
and Goniatitina), Clymeniida (with the suborders Gonioclymeniina
and Clymeniina), Ceratitida (with the suborders Paraceltitina, Otoceratina,
Meekoceratina, Sageceratina, Ptychitina, Ceratitina, Pinacoceratina, Megaphyllitina,
Arcestina and Lobitina), Phylloceratida, Lytoceratida (with
the suborders Lytoceratina and Turrilitina) and Ammonitida (with the
suborders Ammonitina, Haploceratina, Perisphinctina and Ancyloceratina).
Diagnoses of these orders and suborders are given.
