This paper aims at reviewing the information of the Carboniferous ammonoids published in China before the
close of 1988.  As a result, they are grouped into 16 generic zones, the Gattendorfia, the Pericyclus, the Fasciperi-
cyclus-Ammonellipsites, the Beyrichoceras, the Goniatites, the Dombarites-Eumorphoceras, the Homoceras, the
Reticuloceras, the Bilinguites-Cancelloceras, the.Branneroceras-Gastrioceras, the Axinolobus, the Winslowoceras, the
Eowellerites, the Wellerites, the Parashumardites and the Shumardites zones.  Several of these zones, i. e. the
Tournaisian, Serpukhovian and lower Bashkirian zones, have been reported to occur in abundance in South and
Northwest China.  Some forms are newly recognized stratigraphically or revised taxonomically.  Besides, discussion
on the history in the study of the Carboniferous ammonoids of China is also made.
