37 ammonoid genera have so far known from the Japanese Permian, six, 25 and 12 genera from the Lower, Middle and Upper Permian. Most of the Middle Permian genera, and all of Late Permian genera have been reported from the S- Kitakami Belt in NE Japan are characterized have been reported from the South Kitakami Belt in NE Japan and have contributed to date the fusulinoidean-poor, mudstone-facies strata. The Roadian ammonoids from the S Kitakami are charaterized by such genera as Adrianites, Perrinites and Demarezites, Wordian ones are Tauroceras, Waagenoceras and Paraceltites, and Capitanian ones Timorites and Cibolites. Among the Permian ammonoids from the S Kitakami, Araxoceratid such as Araxoceras, Vescotoceras, Eusanyangites and Dzhulfoceras are Wuchiapingian indexes and Paratirolites is Changhsingian one.The Middle and Late Permian ammonoid faunas of the South Kitakami consists of the Tethys type (equatorial type) and cosmopolitan genera, without Boreal type ones, and therefore, it is considered that the S Kitakami Belt had located near equator during Middle to Late Permian time.
