Type species: Goniatites lituus Barrande, 1865, p.   [OD].

Shell advolute in early growth stage, later becoming evolute and loosely coiled, moderately expanding. Umbilicus wide, with large umbilical perforation. Imprint zone absent during the greater part of ontogeny (may be faintly visible in intermediate growth stages). Cross-section of whorls subcircular. Ribs distinct, in early stage radiate or rursiradiate, later with slight lateral and well defined ventral sinus. Growth lines parallel with ribs. Suture very simple, with only slightly differentiated dorsal and ventral lobes (indistinct in late ontogenic stages) and small ventral lobe [Chlupac & Turek, 1983, p.21].

Klug, 2001, p.504: Evolute discoidal conch of moderate to moderately large size, last whorl gyroconical; with a small imprint zone in the first and second whorl. Whorl cross section circular to oval. Moderately wide umbilicus. Protoconch subsphaerical, gently bent. High to very high whorl expansion rate (2.5 to 2.9). Sculpture with 40 to 50 ribs per whorl, gently biconvex non-bifurcating growth lines, with a very shallow or absent lateral sinus, a shallow ventrolateral projection, and a shallow external sinus. Suture line with a small external lobe, a broad and shallow lateral lobe, and sometimes with a small internal lobe (indistinct in later growth stages).

Comparisons (Klug, 2001, p.505): This genus differs from the other genera of the Teicherticeratidae in the loosely coiled adult shell and the wide circular whorl cross section. In contrast to Irdanites KLUG 2001, the growth lines have a shallow dorsal sinus at one stage and lack a deep ventral sinus in the adult whorls. Convoluticeras ERBEN 1960 has a more thinly discoidal conch with flattened flanks and a higher whorl expansion rate (2.8-3.5).

A:    Conch advolute, Ww/D 0.3 - 0.4.
B:    Shallow ventral sinus.
C:    Riblets simple.
G:    EL or ELI.
