Type species: Goniatites zorgensis Roemer,1866, p.209, junior synonym of Goniatites fecundus Barrande,1865, pl.10 [fide Chlupac & Turek, 1983, p.32]; SD Chlupac & Turek, 1983.

[Chlupac & Turek, 1983, p.31: Shell advolute to gently involute (in late growth stages), moderately to rapidly expanding. Imprint zone developed in later growth stages. Umbilicus with distinct umbilical perforation (protoconch not in contact with the first whorl). Growth lines in mature stages biconvex, with well defined lateral sinus. Suture with rather shallow dorsal lobe (lacking in early stages), broadly rounded lateral lobe, and narrow ventral lobe.

Klug, 2001, p.509: Shell of small to large size, evolute, thinly discoidal to discoidal. Whorl cross section of the first two whorls approximately circular, in later whorls subtrapezoidal. Umbilicus narrow to moderately wide, moderately large umbilical window (< 1 mm). Whorl expansion rate increases remarkably from the second whorl on (> 2.5, later up to 3.9). Growth line course biconvex with prominent ventrolateral projection and deep ventral sinus.

Comparisons (Klug, 2001, p.510): Archanarcestes BECKER & HOUSE 1994, Chlupacites BECKER & HOUSE 1994, and Mimanarcestes BOGOSLOVSKY 1969 all have wider whorls (ww/wh > 0.9). Additionally, Archanarcestes and Mimanarcestes have a wider umbilicus. In contrast to the umbilical width/diameter ratio of 0.2 in Mimagoniatites, the former two genera have a higher ratio of over 0.3. Although the whorl cross section of Paraphyllites HYATT 1900 is more laterally flattened (ww/dm < 0.3) than in Mimagoniatites, the similarity of the two genera cannot be denied.
