Type species: Goniatites obtusus Phillips, p.234. [SD Bisat, 1924, p.84, BMNH C247a, figured by Phillips 1836, pl.19
fig.10-11].

A:   Conch form discoidal, involute, with very narrow umbilicus.
B:   Ornamentation consists of usually biconvex growth lines, sometimes crenulate.
D:   Constrictions may be present.
G:   Ventral lobe relatively wide, median saddle moderately low. Sides of ventral lobe orad divergent, sometimes slightly
sinuous; apical points of branches  of ventral lobe diverging apicad. First lateral saddle narrowly rounded to subacute;
adventitious lobe V-shaped and symmetrical, with convex sides, pointed.

[Some authors assign Beyrichoceras to Muensteroceratidae or Anthracoceratidae; Riley, 1990, p.151 regards
 Beyrichoceras as belonging within Girtyoceratidae; Korn, Klug & Mapes assign it to Maxigoniatitidae.]
