Type species: Goniatites rouvillei von Koenen, 1886, p.166 [OD].

[Bogoslovskii, 1958, p.73, Cabrieroceras: Conch barrel-shaped, evolute, with very wide, low whorls, in small specimens and thickly discoidal in large ones.  Ventral and lateral sides form one slightly convex area.  Umbilical rim distinct.  Umbilical wall steep.  Umbilicus wide and deep.  Suture-line consists of one ventral,  one lateral and one dorsal lobe.  Ventral lobe very wide, funnel shaped, with narrow, elongated end.  Weakly expressed lateral lobe on the umbilical wall.]

[Chlupac & Turek, 1983, p.114:  Shell with very broad, low whorls and shallow imprint zone. Ventral and lateral sides united in a single broadly convex plane; umbilical walls fall steeply to umbilical seam. Umbilicus broad, regularly expanding, without umbilical perofration. Protoconch strongly curved. Suture with shallow and rounded dorsal lobe, faitly indicated or lacking weak lobe (if present) situated at umbilical wall, and V-shaped ventral lobe. Course of suture almost rectilinear laterally. Sculpture consists of rather dense growth lines and indicated nodes. Wrinkler layer well developed.]
