Ventral lobe complex, with tendency to increase suture elements. Conch form discoidal to lenticular;
adult stages oxycone or with separate keel. Ventral lobe wide, at least at its basis subdivided, in some
cases (Karagandoceras and Prodromitidae) in the mode of Praeglyphioceratidae by trifid partition of the
ventral portion of suture [Germ.] E --> (E1EmE1), [Russ.] V --> (V2V1V2) or in others (Voehringerites)
in the mode of Muensteroceratidae by bifid subdivision of the ventral lobe [Germ.] E --> (E1E1) -->
(E1EmE1) [Russ.] V --> (V1V1); origin of other elements not known. [Artificial grouping. This superfamily
comprises small groups, which probably derived independently from different stocks within the
Prionoceratinae. They have conch form and subdivision of ventral lobe in common, but they differ in the
mode of the subdivision. Ontogenetic development of suture line poorly known]. [For discussion see
WORK, MAPES & THOMPSON, 1988].

No increase of suture elements in the umbilical area. [For
discussion see BARTZSCH & WEYER, 1988].
