Type species: Platygoniatites molaris Ruzhentsev, 1958, p.158 [OD].

[=Altayceras WANG, 1983, p.527, type A. chinensis, p.528; OD (subj.)].

A:   Some forms with tendency toward triangular coiling on immature stages.
G:   Ventral lobe very wide at its base, median saddle higher than half the height of entire ventral lobe. Adventitious lobe
wide, ampullaceous. Sides of ventral and adventitious lobes with processes, but not yet tridentate.

[=Altayceras is based on a single compressed and poorly preserved specimen which may belong in Platygoniatites].

[Ruzhentsev & Bogoslovskaia, 1970, p.215: Very large, subdiscoidal conch.  Whorls very
involute.  Umbilicus from moderately tight to very tight.  Early forms possess lirae,
which may disappear with progressing evolution.  Lirae and radial growth lines form
ventral and  lateral sinuses, which are separated by a significant salient.  Elements
of the ventral lobe are very wide, with either weak or significant sideward projections
and a long outgrowth.  Lateral lobe is generally of the same width and shape.  The
second lateral saddle is very wide.]
