Type species: Imitoceras cherokeense Miller & Owen, 1939, p. 145 [OD].

[Nassichuk, 1975, p.68: The conch of Maximites is globular during early ontogeny but is subdiscoidal to ellipsoidal
at maturity; its diameter is invariably less than 10 mm. Whorls are markedly involute and the umbilicus is either
completely closed or less than 5 per cent of the conch diameter: Ornament consists of faint, biconvex
transverse growth lamellae and fine, sinuous longitudinal lirae. Despite the relatively small size of this genus,
sutures are closely spaced, suggesting maturity. Details of the external suture best characterize the taxon;
the bifid ventral lobe is narrow and deep, with variously rounded prongs, and the first lateral lobe is broad
and shallow. The siphuncle is about one-quarter the distance from the venter to dorsum.  Sutural formula is: VLU:ID].
