Diagnosis.-Conch small to intermediate in size, with very small umbilicus (U/D 0.015-0.05) md conspicuously modified
mature aperture; surface smooth or with variously develope coarse longitudinal lirae and/or transverse ribs.  Siphuncle
proportionally large (diameter one-fifth to one-third of chamber height), retrochoanitic, usually subcentral or situated within
dorsal septal flexure but ventral-marginal in first and second whorls. Protoconch in Pseudohalorites is lange and appears
subdivided by a septum similar to that in Tornoceras.  Sutural fomula: VLU:ID; external lobes smooth to serrate.
Taxonomy.-Three subfamilies, Shouchangocerainae, Pseu- dohaloritinae and Yinoceratinae based on advent and
extent of sutural serration.  Most genera were endemics of the isolated bio- topes within ihe Restricted-Sea of South
China (Zhou, 1986).  Di morphism common, but incompletely analyzed due to inadequate reference collections.
Occurrence.-Upper Pennsylvanian (Missourian) Upper Permian (Changhsingian); South China, North America and
 Oman.
