Type species: Goniatites marianus de Verneuil, 1845, p.369 [OD].

A:   Conch small, with low and wide whorl section; umbilicus moderately wide.
B-F: Sculpture consisting of nodes, originating at umbilical ridge, prolonging to ribs; growth lines and spiral ornamentation
weak.

[Originally, only small, perhaps immature specimens known. LIBROVICH regarded Marianoceras as a subgenus of
Branneroceras because of its relatively wide umbilicus; it seems, however, closely related to Verneuilites and may
be its junior synonym].

[Ruzhentsev et Bogoslovskaya, 1978, p.241: Conch subsphaericone.  Whorls very involute.  Umbilicus of middle size.  Umbilical folds, which form into protuberances on the umbilical rim, are present in young specimens.  From these protuberances, clusters of thin, crenulated riblets depart and form a salient, which is complicated by a slight ventral sinus.  Thin lirae present.  Ventral lobe thin (w/h = 0.70), with parallel sides.  Median saddle not very high (saddle height / lobe height = 0.60).]
