A: Conch small, globular, Whorl expansion rate 1.60
G: Median saddle moderately high. Ventrolateral saddle asymmetrical and slightly subacute to acute. Adventitious lobe V-shaped, deep and acute.

Differs from Goniatites in the shape of the ventro−lateral saddle, not distinctly acute, but only subacute. The external lobe is much narrower than in Zhifangoceras Sheng, 1984, the median saddle lower (0.40 in Progoniatites and >0.60 in Zhifangoceras. The ventrolateral saddle in Progoniatites is noticeably more acute.

[The similarity of Goniatites and Progoniatites in suture and conch form suggests synonymy despite considerable age difference (for discussion see Conrad & Pareyn, 1968, p. 572. ?Genus should probably be regarded as a junior synonym of Goniatites.]
