Diagnosis (after DeBaets et al., 2009)

Shell moderate to moderately large (30-80 mm), very loosely coiled, gyroconical.

Umbilicus very wide (Uw/Dm = 0.6-0.7)

Umbilical window large (15 mm in Ivoites hunsrueckianus).

Whorl expansion rate low (1.40-1.70)

Whorl interspace rate high (1.30-2.70 in inner whorls, but

becoming significantly larger, > 3.00, in the outerwhorls

during “uncoiling” phase).

Densely spaced, radiate to rursiradiate riblets (70-100 prowhorl, RRI: 6-20

and ARI: 8-49) and thin parallel growth lines.



"Ivoites can be distinguished from Erbenoceras by its more loosely coiled conch, more slender whorls, and more densely ribbed shell. The inner whorls might resemble a few species of Ruanites to some extent, but are typically more densely ribbed and quickly become more loosely coiled with whorl interspace becoming larger than the following whorl (WII: 0.10-3.00 in the inner and middle whorls, but over 3.00 during uncoiling. Borivites is more loosely coiled, has a lower whorl expansion rate and completes approximately only one whorl before uncoiling." (De Baets et al., 2009)
