Type species: Clymenia angulosa Münster, 1843, p.40 [OD], [= Goniatites planus Münster,1832].

A:   Conch form discoidal, venter broadly rounded, flanks flattened; umbilicus moderately wide.
B:   Fine growth lines with concave-convex course, weak ventrolateral salient and deep external sinus.
C:   No ribs, or 20 to 30 simple ribs on flanks which are connected with prominent ventrolateral spines.
G:   Divided ventral lobe; lateral lobe V-shaped.

[BOGOSLOVSKIY 1981, p.50: Conch thinly discoidal, with high, subrectangular in cross-section, weakly involute whorls, wide umbilicus, smooth or with ventrolateral ribs and spines, sometimes with a ventral groove on adult whorls.  Suture line forms a ventral, an umbilical, an inner lateral and a dorsal lobe.  Ventral lobe wide, flat, two-parted, with a flat middle saddle.  Umbilical lobe deep, relatively thin, wedge-shaped, sharpened at the end.  Inner lateral lobe not large, angled, located outside of the umbilical seam;  dorsal lobe deep, very thin, wedge-shaped, with almost parallel sides and sharpened end.]
