Superfamily Schistocerataceae Schmidt, 1929:

A:   Conch form discoidal to thick-discoidal; evolute, usually with wide umbilicus, to moderately involute, with narrow
umbilicus. Triangular coiling of early whorls common in some groups.
B:   Shell surface smooth, or reticulate; growth lines sinuous, with ventral sinus.
C:   Early whorls may exhibit riblike nodes on umbilical shoulder, extending to biconvex growth striae.
G:   Suture-line like Gastricocerataceae, but with the following tendencies in the course of phylogeny: (1) median
saddle becoming as high as entire ventral lobe; (2) ventral lobe becoming wide, in some forms giving rise to
additional sutural elements or subelements (Welleritidae); (3) umbilical portion of suture (between [Germ.] L and U,
[Russ.] U and I, in some genera giving rise to additional sutural elements: [Germ.] (E1EmE1)AL:UI -->
(E1EmE1)ALU2:U1I --> E1EmE1ALU2vU2mU2dU1I, [Russ.] (V1V1)LU:ID
--> (V1V1)LU1:U2ID --> (V1V1)LU1U2.2U2.1:U2.2ID (Schistoceratidae, Welleritidae, Christioceratidae); (4)
trifurcation of lobes (Schistoceratidae, Christioceratidae).

Family Orulganitidae Ruzhentsev, 1965:

A:   Conch form discoidal to globular, moderately to completely involute; umbilicus moderately narrow to narrow.
Early whorls generally with triangular coiling; adult whorls normally coiled. B:   Sculpture consisting of longitudinal
lirae; biconvex growth lines faint.
C:   No tubercles or nodes.
G:   Prongs of ventral lobe relatively narrow, median saddle usually half as high than entire ventral lobe.

[Ruzhentsev & Ganelin, 1971, p.56]: Shell ranging from subsperoconic to pachyconic, with triangular coiling of early
whorls gradually dying out in the course of phylogeny. Whorls ranging from moderately to entirely involute. Umbilicus
ranging from moderately broad to narrow. Sculpture consisting of well-developed longitudinal lirae and very fine
transverse lines, more or less curved in path from one umbilical shoulder to other.

A total of 8 lobes with formula (V1 V1)LU:ID. In initial species ventral lobe is narrow (wl/hl ~0.60), but subsequently
widens to (wl/hl~1.00). Genetically this family is closest to the Schistoceratidae. Morphologically the two groups
compared are related by the triangular coiling of the early whorls. Orulganitids differ sharply from schistoceratids in
having a broader shell, in lacking tubercles, and in having a far simpler suture line: in orulganitids the number of
lobes is invariably 8, whereas in schistoceratids it is increased by thorough-going division of the original umbilical
lobe (from 8 to 14).
